For generations, Indigenous communities have gathered in circles—spaces of learning, healing, and connection. In the unceded territory of Renfrew County, a new circle has formed. Nenaawateg, meaning “a hub” or “the centre of a network” in Algonquin, is our Indigenous-led initiative dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming space for Indigenous Peoples to gather, reclaim their cultural heritage, and educate the broader community about Indigenous traditions and contemporary issues.
The Origins of Our Hub
Nenaawateg was created by The Circle of Lodge, a solely Indigenous organization with charitable status that has been providing connection and community for Indigenous communities since 1999. Recognizing the need for a community-based initiative to bring together Indigenous Peoples and Allies, The Circle of Turtle Lodge founded a safe p-lace to gather in Pembroke, delivering cultural programming to 474 participants between Summer 2022 and Fall 2023. Now, the organization is based in the new MyFM Centre Recreation Complex, continuing its mission to foster a sense of belonging, hope, and purpose among Indigenous youth and the broader Indigenous community.
A Safe Space for Cultural Reclamation
The 2021 census reported that over 8,400 self-declared Indigenous individuals reside in Renfrew County. However, due to Indian Act restrictions, many cannot access cultural or wellness services through the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation. There are no Native Friendship Centres in the county, leaving a significant gap in culturally appropriate services.
The Circle of Turtle Lodge seeks to fill this void by providing Indigenous individuals—whether Status, Non-Status, Inuit, or Métis—with a racially safe space to reconnect with their heritage. The organization offers culturally appropriate, wholistic programs that empower people to lead more balanced and fulfilling lives.
Cultural Programming and Community Engagement
Through its range of initiatives, The Circle of Turtle Lodge brings Indigenous knowledge and traditions to the forefront, benefitting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants.
Offerings include:
- Cultural education services, such as seminars, workshops, and an annual cultural conference
- Traditional ceremonies, including rites of passage, seasonal feasts, Sharing Circles, and Sweat Lodge Ceremonies
- Reconciliation education, fostering understanding among settlers, educators, church groups, and the general public
The Circle of Turtle Lodge has already established partnerships with key organizations, including Bonnechere Provincial Parks, Algonquin College, Family & Children Services of Renfrew County, Pembroke Township, Petawawa Council, and the Garrison Petawawa Military Museum. These collaborations have allowed for the delivery of cultural teachings and public events that strengthen the bridge between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
Looking ahead, The Circle of Turtle Lodge envisions the creation of a dedicated Healing Centre, built on land generously donated through a Land Back initiative. This future space will serve as a sanctuary for cultural resurgence, spiritual growth, and community healing.
But despite its successes, The Circle of Turtle Lodge faces ongoing challenges in securing ongoing operational funds that would allow them to fully staff the office and provide more robust cultural programming.
